GAZ is a dystopian opera at the intersection of post-dramatic and instrumental theater by director Virlyana Tkach, composers Roman Hryhoriv and Illia Razumeiko.
Our agency provided logistical support for the play premiere at Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater in Kyiv, as well as the premiere in Vienna. We were responsible for accommodation, catering and transportation of the team and props around Kyiv and Vienna. In addition, we provided financial and grant management, artist management, rehearsal support and branding.
The setting of the opera is built around the story of an explosion at a futuristic factory that once produced energy for the entire industrial society. The central image of the artistic reality is a prepared piano — the former console of an industrial giant, which combined the living and the man-made in one system. The opera is built on the principle of compositional thinking and creative co-authorship between the composers and the director.
The inspiration for the opera GAZ is found in the play "Gaz" by Ukrainian avant-garde theater director Les Kurbas, realized in 1923 at the "Berezil" theater. The play is based on the homonymous work of German expressionist writer Georg Kaiser.
